Chicagoland Junction Series: Thornton Junction. Thornton, IL. 10-13-09.
Located in the suburb of Thornton, IL is another junction where UP's Villa Grove Subdivision crosses over CN trackage. Thornton is truly suburban and the town is not industrial or seedy like other junction towns. The CN line crossed at grade here is the Ex. GTW Elsden Subdivision which passes through other familiar hotspots like Blue Island and Griffith. There is a connector between the two railroads in the Northeast quadrant. UP's Yard Center resides to the North. Dolton Junction is to the North and Jay Tower is to the South from this point. All of these make a nice set to railfan. Here is my second day at Thornton Jct. I went out to catch the Northbound Amtrak Hoosier State, but must have missed it by minutes. 10:43AM- The lengthy M-PRPB (125 cars) finally got permission to cross the CN Elsden Subdivision. Chicagoland Junction Series: NERSKA/ LEMOYNE Crossing, Chicago, IL. 10-17-09.
NERSKA Crossing is an old Chicago Junction located on the South Side. This spot used to be popular back in the day when it was more accessible, but due to heightened security, this junction is pretty much off limits. Going East and West is the BNSF Chillicothe Subdivision. BNSF knows this spot as "NERSKA" while BRC knows it as "Lemoyne." BNSF's huge Corwith Intermodal Yard sits East of this junction and lots of intermodal traffic moves in and out through here. Running North and South is the BRC Mainline. The Belt Railway Of Chicago handles many transfers and trackage rights trains from the first class railroads. Up to 50 trains a day can be seen on this busy mainline. The bridge to the North is a swing bridge. In fact, one of only seven on the Chicago Sanitary And Ship Canal. Not that many considering the number of railroad bridges that cross this river. South of where the BNSF and BRC cross at grade is the CN/IC Joliet Subdivision. The CN resides on the south side of the I-55/Stevenson Expressway and handles Amtrak's Lincoln Service and Texas Eagle Trains. BNSF seemed to dominate the entire junction today. 3:53PM- A BNSF loaded coal drag fresh off the Chicago Subdivision pounds the diamonds as it heads South on the BRC. The DPU appears to be leading. The IAIS was working around the Junction today. Other than that, not too many frills. 11:58AM- The IAIS had a BISW job working around the IHB and CN interchanges today. IAIS #157 just had it's horn replaced with a great sounding K3LA. The classic ATSF caboose was in the consist today too. 12:08PM- It wasn't long before the BISW switched over from the IHB to the connector leading back to The Rock. The caboose was then set off at the siding, with the power returning back to Burr Oaks Yard. Chicagoland Junction Series: Jay Tower, Chicago Heights, IL. 10-12-09.
Jay Tower in Chicago Heights is where the Ex. EJ&E Eastern Subdivision (CN Matteson Subdivision crosses the Ex. C&EI UP Villa Grove Subdivision at grade. There is an interchange at the Northtwest quadrant as well as the Southeast one. Other than run through trains on both railroads, both railroads do a lot of interchanging here. Jay Tower has been closed for a while now. EJ&E #668 was spotted East of the junction shuffling cars around the yard. EJ&E #668 is currently assigned to the L51491 Matteson Turn out of Kirk Yard. At 12:44PM, #668 took one tank car to the UP interchange lead where it would wait for welders to get of the right of way. 1:32PM- M302 rounds the bend as it sounds it's horn at the many crossings scattered throughout Chicago Heights. The #668 has been waiting for clearance about an hour now. CN C44-9W #2633 CN ES44DC #2306 2:02PM- Workers finally clear out to give EJ&E #668 clearance to UP trackage. Minutes later, they drop off their load and return to home trackage. EJ&E #668 returned to Kirk Yard light from this point. 3:16PM- Welding is back underway again as this CSX intermodal races North to UP's Yard Center or home trackage at Dolton. The UP Villa Grove Subdivision an Ex. Chicago And Eastern Illinois route with CSX having trackage rights. UPDATE: 911 calls corroborate witness accounts - www.wlsam.com A Chicago woman who played witness to a beach melee on Memorial Day weekend wants Chicago police and officials to come clean about what happened along the lakefront in May. On May 30, city officials closed North Avenue Beach because of excessive heat, but Amy Schwartz says no one is talking about the excessive violence that prompted her to call 911 that day. "There's a fight breaking out on the beach because there's nothing but animals covering this beach today," Schwarz phoned into the police. "What the hell is going on. Schwartz said she was walking from Oak Street Beach toward North Avenue Beach on Memorial Day when she witnessed a woman being beaten by a gang of people on the beach. "They were being rude and abusive and throwing trash around and defecating," Schwartz said. "The crowd became very animated. They were cheering on the beating and more people joined in, so I kept walking forward. I was afraid I could be next." Schwartz believes the story of what really happened that day is being purposely downplayed in the name of saving Chicago's summer tourist business and the reputations of the city's new mayor and police superintendent. Both Garry McCarthy and Rahm Emanuel have said the people suffering from heat exhaustion was the only reason for closing the beach. Here's a compilation video of Iowa Interstate and Chicago Rail Link from Blue Island Junction on the 26th. As you can probably figure out, I had to make a seperate video since I couldn't fit it into one. CRL made a somewhat rare appearance here today and it was awesome. 8:54AM- IAIS GP38-2 #721 and ES44AC #504 bring a BISW job down the IHB/CN connector line. 9:13AM- The BISW reverses down the IHB to set out the cars at Riverdale Yard. 10:24AM- The afternoon hasn't even rolled around yet and the morning BISW job has finished it's duties. The power returns light back up the IHB, further on to the connecter that brought them here. 10:37AM- With the GEVO in lead, the power advances down the weed-ridden connector line back to Metra Trackage. 12:03PM- An unexpected horn sounds to the East on the Rock Island, and soon enough, a Rail Link hopper extra chugs across the bridge. Omnitrax (OSSX) GP7L #4438 and Ex. Conrail LLPX GP15-1 #1503 are in charge. 12:14PM- As we hoped,the Rail Link job backs down the connector line into the junction. The Central Soya cars will be dropped off on the other side of the river somewhere. 12:29PM- It wasn't long before the cars were dropped off and the units returned light. 1:43PM- We did a little trespassing to catch the units on another job. LaVernge is the gateway into the Chicago Terminal area along the BNSF Chicago Subdivision. Looking East, you'll see the CN Freeport Subdivision crossing over the Racetrack. Thisseries of videos is about chicagoland which is the biggest and oldest coin-op show in the world. This is the mother of all coin-op shows. Held twice at year in 2 exhibition halls at the beautiful Pheasant Run Resort Hotel near Chicago Illinois. This is one special Show the hilites include Jukeboxes, Slot Machines, Antique Advertising, Penny Arcade Stuff, Pinball Machines, old Arcade Games from the 1920's thru 1979 old fortune Tellers, Strength testers, Lung Testers, Penny arcade table top games, old soda pop machines and soda fountain and diner items. If it is old and it is some how coin-op related it is probably at this show. I attended this show in the spring of 2008 and made a long series of videos covering the show and what I saw and experienced. If you do a search on the Internet you will not find much in the way of pictures or video about this show. The purpose of my series of video's I took is to let you peak into this awesome world of coin-op collecting. If you have never been to this show maybe this will spur you on to take a trip to coin-op utopia. I have about 34 five minute videos I took of this show.
