This is part one of my absolute favorite musical of all time, "Company" by Stephen Sondheim. This is the PBS "Great Performances" recording of the 2006 Revival of "Company" directed by John Doyle, the director of the 2005 Revival of "Sweeney Todd" also by Stephen Sondheim. In both of these revivals there are no musicians, the actors play all of the instruments, very challenging, yet very effective. The star of this production of "Company" is Raul Esparza who plays Bobby, a seemingly happy Manhattan bachelor with a deep hidden sadness. The cast of this production shows extreme strength in the area of ensemble work. This production has one of the best interpretations of the song "Getting Married Today" I have ever heard, Heather Laws does an amazing job with it. The Company is an American fiction miniseries that follows the Cold War intelligence battle between the CIA and the KGB from the end of World War II to the fall of the Soviet Union. The protagonist is Jack McAuliffe (Chris O'Donnell), an idealistic and naive "true believer" who was recruited from Yale by his crew coach. Jack begins his career stationed in Berlin to work with Harvey Torriti (Alfred Molina), who is codenamed "the Sorcerer." Torriti takes Jack under his wing, and the two keep in touch even after Jack's career takes him from Berlin. A string of failed missions from Berlin to the Bay of Pigs Invasion forces Jack to conclude that the CIA has been severely penetrated by a KGB mole. The miniseries centers on the efforts of Jack and Harvey, along with the increasingly paranoid counterintelligence chief James Angleton (Michael Keaton), to expose and destroy the mole. Angleton becomes so paranoid he is forced to retire when he argues that evidence apparently clearing a suspected mole was actually incriminating evidence because it was too easily discovered. Company B was a dance pop trio put together by Miami-based producer Ish Ledesma. Ledesma had already found pop success fronting Foxy in the '70s and Oxo in the '80s. Consisting of Lori L., Lezlee Livrano, and Susan Johnson, the trio, adorned with white wigs and clad in blue leather, first made waves with the single "Fascinated," which took clubs by storm in 1986. It crossed over to the pop charts in the early months of 1987, climbing into the Top 30. Follow-up singles "Full Circle," "Perfect Lover," and "Jam on Me" failed to equal that mainstream success, but they were club hits. All were contained on their self-titled album, which briefly charted late that summer. Livrano and Johnson left before recording a second album and were replaced by Donna Huntley and Julie Marie. A sophomore effort, Gotta Dance, elicited little response outside the club world and the remainder of their output would be repackagings of their hits.
