This extraordinary documentary details the rise and the fall of the original gangster rap label Death Row Records. What makes this movie so powerful is just how much information it actually has in it. The movie starts out talking about NWA, Eazy E, and Dr. Dre as a prelude to the springing of Death Row Records. A lot of time is dedicated to the roots of Death Row Records, how they got their original funding and the men behind Suge Knight, Harry 'O' (Michael Harris), and attorney David Kenner. The movie covers the making of the Chronic and Doggystyle extensively. They go into Snoop's trial, the departure of RBX and DOC The East Vs. West and Source Awards confrontation is covered, and over course the infusion of 2pac to Death Row. 2pac's murder is thorough but isn't in depth, but this isn't meant to be a 2pac murder doc...its an overall take on Death Row Records and what had happened to the once successful rap label. As far as attitude goes, this is a very hard movie. The editing, the music, everything about the production of the DVD is great. One of the highlights to the DVD is the special features. Their are extensive interviews with people closely involved with the Death Row company. This documentary is recommended to any music fan, who either likes these artists or has an interest in the music business and wants to know what mistakes not to make.

Escaping death row: Cory Maye's first interview after leaving jail
After 10 years of incarceration and seven years after a jury sentenced him to die, 30 year- old Cory Maye is a free man again. On December 26, 2001, police officers entered his side of a duplex apartment. A search warrant being served named a known drug dealer that shared the other half of the building. Upon hearing noises, Maye grabbed his gun and went into his daughter's room. When Officer Ron Jones entered the room, Maye fired three shots. Maye claims that he didn't hear officers announce themselves and didn't realize he had fired at police until he heard them shouting after he had discharged his weapon. Maye was initially found guilty of murder and sentenced to death — later on, his sentence was reduced to life. At the end of last year, the Mississippi Supreme Court ruled that Maye was to be given a new trial because trial court didn't initially allow his argument of self-defense and because he was denied a trial in his home county. Eventually Maye signed a plea agreement and pled guilty to manslaughter for the 2001 death of Prentiss, Mississippi, police officer Ron Jones, Jr. Per the agreement, a judge then sentenced Maye to 10 years in prison, time he has now already served. RT's Kaelyn Forde and Reason's Radley Balko were the first to interview Cory after he was released from jail.

Clemency Denied for Troy Davis; Georgia Death Row Inmate Scheduled to Die Sept. 21
Troy Davis is trending after the Georgia Pardons Board denied his 11th-hour plea for clemency. Davis has served 20 years on death row in Georgia since being convicted of murdering a police officer in 1989 in Savannah. Davis, who has always maintained his innocence, has supporters around the world, including Pope Benedict and Desmond Tutu. Hundreds of vigils have been held in the last week. Davis? lawyers point to a lack of DNA evidence linking him to the murder and a number of key eye-witness recantations after his conviction. Former President Jimmy Carter says, "This case illustrates the deep flaws in the application of the death penalty in this country.? Davis will die via lethal injection at 7 pm Eastern on Sept, 21, barring intervention by the US Supreme Court, which is considered unlikely.

In the late '80's, producer Andre "Dr. Dre" Young was a member of the gangsta rap group NWA, signed to fellow member Eric "Eazy-E" Wright's Ruthless Records. As head of production at the label, Dre produced a large number of Ruthless projects, many of them high-selling; feeling the pressures of having to produce so many acts, Dre became interested Ruthless[3]. After the departure of Ice Cube over financial disagreements with Heller[4], artist and friend The DOC and friend Suge Knight went over the books with a lawyer. Convinced that Heller was dishonest, they approached Young about forming a label with them, away from Heller and Eazy-E[5]. Allegedly using strong-arm tactics, Knight was able to procure contracts from Eazy for The DOC, Dr. Dre and singer Michel'le[6]. Knight approached successful rapper Robert "Vanilla Ice" Van Winkle, using management connections with rapper Mario "Chocolate" Johnson, claiming that Johnson had written and produced the song, and had not received credit or royalties for the song.[7] Knight and two bodyguards arrived at The Palm in West Hollywood, where Van Winkle was eating. After shoving Van Winkle's bodyguards aside, Knight and his own bodyguards sat down in front of Van Winkle, staring at him before finally asking "How you doin'?"[7] Similar incidents were repeated on several occasions before Knight showed up at Van Winkle's hotel suite on the fifteenth floor of the Bel Age Hotel, accompanied by Johnson and a member of the Oakland Raiders <b>...</b>

Darby Tillis was freed in 1987 after new evidence emerged about his decade-old case. Fourteen years later, Tillis was pardon based on actual innocence, making him one of the first death row prisoners to be exonerated. We are also joined by Lawrence Hayes, who was a death-row inmate in New York before the US Supreme Court suspended capital punishment in 1972. Hayes was paroled in 1991 after 20 years in prison, and since then has become a spokesman against the death penalty.
