Building a More Efficient Ruby Interpreter
Google Tech Talk December 11, 2009 ABSTRACT Presented by Hongli Lai and Ninh Bui from Phusion. The Ruby programming language powers a significant portion of today's websites and is still growing in popularity. However, its implementation is not as efficient as it could be, and in this talk we will explain how Ruby Enterprise Edition addresses some of these issues. Ruby has a relatively high memory usage compared to eg C++, and we've found that this is partially caused by the fact that memory for program code is not shared between multiple interpreter instances as is possible in C++ programs. One way to battle this problem is by leveraging copy-on-write virtual memory semantics. However, Ruby's garbage collector hostile to this technique. We will explain how we've made the garbage collector copy-on-write friendly, how we've leveraged Linux kernel features during the development of this enhancement, how our Phusion Passenger web app deployment product leverages copy-on-write and how much memory one can save. Another problem the fact that Ruby's userspace threading implementation severely degrades in performance in the face of large thread stacks. Several contributors have identified the source of this problem: Ruby copies the entire thread stack during a context switch. We will explain how they've identified this problem, what obstacles we've faced during the development of a patch and just how significant the improvement is.

You can subscribe to it if you want, but I find it counter productive since all you need to do is subscribe to my channel and it works the same way. I was having a huge migraine at the time of recording, so sorry for some of the pauses or rambling. You can think of this episode as a mythbuster style video, where I prove what is better then the other.The main goal of this vid was to find out what is better to use for tool durability, iron sword or sheers, and then what is better to make with iron ingots for armor. Both require 2 iron ingots, but a sword needs a common stick to make. For the armor, you need 8 ingots to make a platebody, 7 for platelegs, 5 for helment, and 4 for boots. From the results of the video: Iron Sword only gave 126 uses while shears gave 239 For the Armor, its best to always make a platebody with 8 ingots, instead of dividing them up with the lower versions (ie a boot and helm for 9 ingots, only giving 2 durability armor).

CrossFit Journal - Perfecting the Box Jump
By Kelly Starrett and Carl Paoli Box jumps are mainly about jumping onto a box. Simple, right? But like any CrossFit movement, you can always add a good dose of virtuosity for increased speed, efficiency and grace. Kelly Starrett and Carl Paoli explain exactly how to set up for efficient box jumps, and they say it all starts with foot position and body position. As all supple leopards know, great body position takes work, so Starrett offers up some mobility drills to get you ready to bounce. The experts also explain how the standard of landing on top of the box and opening the hips usually results in good positioning, while the landing on the ground is sometimes less than graceful. Often the knees go into bad positions on the ground landing, which creates what Starrett calls a "torque dump." To prevent this, Paoli recommends keeping the feet quite close together during ground contact. By preparing your joints and tissues properly and then using solid positioning during reps, your box-jump efficiency will improve instantly.
