'EU pushing Greece towards revolution'

Much-needed rescue cash will finally start flowing into Greek coffers later this month, as the Eurozone group clears the way for a 130-billion Euro bailout. However, the International Monetary Fund is yet to confirm its part in the deal despite Greece agreeing a bond-swap deal with private creditors. One senior Euro official even suggested its debt could fall more than expected. But Euro MP Paul Nuttall believes southern European countries should just get out of the currency union. Life or Debt: 'Greece must escape bailout prison'

The Greek Parliament is set to approve the country's new international bailout deal later today as more protests, against austerity measures in return for rescue funds, are planned. Athens received a second bailout this year. Combined with its first rescue package, the country stands to receive over 172 billion euros in loans from eurozone countries and the IMF. But Greece's creditors claim the country's most recent austerity measures could be 'accident prone'. Experts say the country may fail to lower its debt burden to the specified targets, later requiring more rescue loans. Greece is in its fifth year of recession, and many believe it needs to recover before debt reduction plans can have much effect. Is the endgame for Greece the same for the US?

European austerity continues to takes its toll. On Tuesday - Greece issued a warning to all the banksters who've invested in about $260 billion worth of Greek debt - telling them they'd better take a new deal accepting about half the value of their investments - or risk getting nothing at all. Greece is hoping that about 90% of its investors will take the haircut - giving Greece a chance to restructure its debt in a way that's more manageable. And investors have until Thursday to decide if they'll take the deal - but if they choose not to - then once again a Greek default becomes a very real possibility. Of course asking investors to take a haircut is nothing compared to what the Greek people have had to sacrifice under years of austerity - with massive layoffs - cuts to social services - and wage decreases. All of which have led to unrest in the streets - hostility with neighboring nations like Germany - and even the ousting of democratically-elected leaders. Greece right now is the epicenter of the crisis of corporate capitalism that is engulfing the world today. And the question isn't how will things work out in Greece - but instead how long until what we're seeing in Greece comes to the United States? Richard Wolff joins Thom now - he is an Economist and Visiting Professor with the Graduate Program in International Affairs at New School University in New York City and Author of the book "Capitalism Hits the Fan."

Everyday life in the country has become a struggle, so much so that even those in the middle classes are relying on handouts. "We cannot put up with any more demands. This is not tax, this is extortion", says a drinks distributor. In a typical shopping quarter in Athens, the shops are almost all shut because people can't afford to buy anything. As Greece Erupts, BBC's Paul Mason on the New Global Revolutions Over Austerity, Inequality

democracynow.org - Greece is bracing for protests after eurozone finance ministers concluded a deal that will provide a $170 billion bailout in return for another round of deep austerity cuts. The bailout is opposed by several unions and left-wing groups in Greece over new cuts and layoffs imposed on public sector workers. Democracy Now! talks wtih Paul Mason, economics editor at BBC Newsnight and author of the new book, "Why It's Kicking Off Everywhere: The New Global Revolutions," who has just returned from Greece. "What makes the headlines are, of course, the riots," Mason says. "What doesn't make so many headlines is what is happening to real people. We're living in a time where the world has, in the last couple of years, erupted in a way many people thought they would never see again since the 1960s. The underpinnings of this new global unrest are [that] people are sick of seeing the rich get richer during a crisis." Greece avoids default, but for how long?

www.euronews.com What has happening in Greece is the biggest restructuring of government debt in history. It comes after a nerve-wracking week when it looked like Greece's private creditors might not agree to the deal. For a long time the investors who had lent Athens billions had haggled in meetings like this one with the finance minister but eventually accepted that if Greece went bankrupt they'd get nothing. One hundred and seventy seven billion euros of loans will be exchanged for new ones with much lower face values, lower interest rates and longer maturities. Nearly 86 percent of the bondholders accepted that and they will lose three quarters of the value of their investments. Muchalis Massourakis, Chief Economist with Greece's Alpha Bank was hopeful a turning point had been reached: "We are going to suffer a big haircut because of this debt restructuring, but at the same time, for us, it is very important -- not the transaction per se -- but the fact that this is the beginning of the restoration of confidence in the economy and this will bring back, let us say, the commercial banking business to the banks." !static.euronews.com Other analysts were not so confident that banks will want to risk lending money to the Athens government even in the long term and some are already predicting that Greece - with its economy in tatters - will start to run out of money again soon perhaps as early as the second half of this year. Breaking news on the Greece financial crisis! Check out this video too - www.youtube.com Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos told members of his government they must back deeper budget cuts needed to prevent financial collapse or quit, as political dissension threatened to unwind the country's second bailout. Papademos said failure to secure the 130 billion-euro ($171 billion) rescue package that's under negotiation threatened 11 million Greeks with a default that would halt the payment of wages and pensions and shut down schools, hospitals and businesses. He spoke after five ministers resigned in two hours and protesters clashed with police in Athens. "Some say default would be preferable," Papademos told a Cabinet meeting in Athens this evening, according to an e-mailed transcript from his office. "They are woefully mistaken. What is of the essence right now is to do whatever we can to approve the new plan and let the loan accord proceed." Concerns the bailout might unravel mounted after euro-area finance ministers yesterday kept back approval of Greece's austerity measures, one of the Greek governing coalition parties pushed back against German demands for deeper cuts, and police used tear gas to counter demonstrators in the capital. Papademos met his ministers to discuss the bill detailing the measures, amounting to 7 percent of gross domestic product to 2014, which will be put to a parliamentary vote this weekend.
