Natural Gas a Brief History

Naturally occurring natural gas was discovered and identified in America as early as 1626, when French explorers discovered natives igniting gases that were seeping into and around Lake Erie. The American natural gas industry got its beginnings in this area. In 1859, Colonel Edwin Drake (a former railroad conductor who adopted the title 'Colonel' to impress the townspeople) dug the first well. Drake hit oil and natural gas at 69 feet below the surface of the earth. Most in the industry characterizes this well as the beginning of the natural gas industry in America. A two-inch diameter pipeline was built, running 5 and ½ miles from the well to the village of Titusville, Pennsylvania. The construction of this pipeline proved that natural gas could be brought safely and relatively easily from its underground source to be used for practical purposes. In 1821, the first well specifically intended to obtain natural gas was dug in Fredonia, New York, by William Hart. After noticing gas bubbles rising to the surface of a creek, Hart dug a 27 foot well to try and obtain a larger flow of gas to the surface. Hart is regarded by many as the 'father of natural gas' in America. Expanding on Hart's work, the Fredonia Gas Light Company was eventually formed, becoming the first American natural gas company. During most of the 19th century, natural gas was used almost exclusively as a source of light. Without a pipeline infrastructure, it was difficult to transport the gas very far, or ...

Natural gas flow causing problems in Argentina

For the past several winters, Argentina's government has rationed natural gas to manufacturers of cooking oil, auto-parts, and cement in the north of the country. The measure is meant to keep gas flowing to households during particularly cold stretches of the winter. 'Price trajectory' is a delicate way of saying that prices must rise for households in the densely populated capital region of Beunos Aries. Gas bills have been heavily subsidized there since the economic crisis ten years ago. Upper-income households pay as little as $15 a month for heat in the winter. With presidential elections coming later this year, that is unlikely to change soon. The government is insisting that new demand from previously unconnected households is causing the energy crunch. Al Jazeera's correspondent, Craig Mauro, reports from Cordoba.

Hydraulic Fracturing- Shale Natural Gas Extraction

This is an educational video describing the unique process of Hydraulic Fracturing used by the oil and gas industry today. Hydraulic Fracturing is a method used to extract natural gas trapped inside shale deposits stored deep underground using controlled explosives and high pressured liquid to create fractures allowing for the flow of natural gas to be pumped to the surface and processed.

Gasland: Dangers of Natural Gas Extraction (Extended Trailer)

The true costs in health and environmental pollution of hydraulic fracturing are exposed in this amazing documentary by Josh Fox. Everyone needs to know this information. Please support the filmmakers. Visit the website, learn the facts, sign petitions, contact your elected officials, share your story. Buy the DVD for everyone you know. Original Trailer at: www.youtube.com Hydraulic fracturing is common world wide, not just in America, and massively pollutes our fresh water supplies (see my other video on: Water - The Basics of Use, Pollution, and Our Health at: www.youtube.com ). "The largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history has swept across the United States. The Halliburton-developed drilling technology of "fracking" or hydraulic fracturing has unlocked a "Saudia Arabia of natural gas" just beneath us. But is fracking safe? When filmmaker Josh Fox is asked to lease his land for drilling, he embarks on a cross-country odyssey uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination." Natural gas extraction is regulated but with numerous exemptions such as such as: 42 USC 300h(d)(1)(B) [underground injection - exemption for fracturing fluid]. You can check out a US Senate report (released in April 2011) on the chemical contents of these frac'ing fluids at: democrats.energycommerce.house.gov "An estimated 30% to 70% of the frac'ing fluid will resurface, bringing back with it toxic substances that are naturally present in underground oil and gas deposits, as well ...

Natural Gas - A Critical Part of the Long Term Energy Solution

Natural gas can make a difference. It is a critical part of the long-term energy solution... it's abundant, affordable, good for the economy and is the cleanest burning fossil fuel. Gas is an important component of a sustainable global energy mix and vital for meeting increased demand for clean electricity. So, how so much gas is out there? Gas is abundantly available. There's enough recoverable gas to supply the world for 250 years at current production levels. And, in the US, for 100 years. In fact, Shell is the second largest gas producer, leader in gas to liquids ("GTL") and one of the largest liquefied natural gas ("LNG") producers. And, affordable? How affordable is it? New gas plants produce electricity at lower cost than any other "new-build" electricity source, be it coal, nuclear, wind or solar. So, that means your electricity bill could be lower with natural gas generated electricity than with coal, nuclear, wind or solar. Natural gas might bring you your next job! Natural Gas employment in North America was over 3.5 million jobs in 2008, 2.8 million of those jobs in the US And, it's helped boost the North American economy with nearly one-half trillion dollars. $385 billion contributed from the natural gas industry in the US! Shell will continue to make significant investments in our onshore North American natural gas business. Since 2001, Shell has invested $17 billion in North American natural gas exploration and development. Greater reliance on gas in power ...

Fracking Hell: The Untold Story

Watch more Earth Focus at www.linktv.org An original investigative report by Earth Focus and UK's Ecologist Film Unit looks at the risks of natural gas development in the Marcellus Shale. From toxic chemicals in drinking water to unregulated interstate dumping of potentially radioactive waste that experts fear can contaminate water supplies in major population centers including New York City, are the health consequences worth the economic gains? Marcellus Shale contains enough natural gas to supply all US gas needs for 14 years. But as gas drilling takes place, using a process called hydraulic fracturing or "fracking," toxic chemicals and methane gas seep into drinking water. Now experts fear that unacceptable levels of radioactive Radium 226 in gas development waste. Fracking chemicals are linked to bone, liver and breast cancers, gastrointestinal, circulatory, respiratory, developmental as well as brain and nervous system disorders. Such chemicals are present in frack waste and may find their way into drinking water and air. Waste from Pennsylvania gas wells -- waste that may also contain unacceptable levels of radium -- is routinely dumped across state lines into landfills in New York, Ohio and West Virginia. New York does not require testing waste for radioactivity prior to dumping or treatment. So drill cuttings from Pennsylvania have been dumped in New York's Chemung and other counties and liquid waste is shipped to treatment plants in Auburn and Watertown New York ...
