These are bits and pieces of my first foot-patrol in Sangin's Fish-tank region with my old friend Gunnery Sgt. John Wodkowski (Woody). This patrol was conducted with Charlie company 1/5, 2nd platoon commanded by Lt. Mark Batey. We were out talking to locals about where the insurgents are hiding, looking for contact as we probe for IEDs in the area. Approximately 4 hours of paroling in the mid-day sun was exhausting. Marines here do this job day-in-day-out without any days off for 7 months.

3/5 Lima Sangin Afghanistan Memorial Video
The extent of the resistance encountered upon arriving in Sangin on October 13, 2010 surprised many of the 3/5 Marines. It was stronger than any Taliban resistance that Marines had witnessed previously in Afghanistan. During prior major Marine operations in Helmand, the insurgents had fought toe-to-toe for a few days and then relied primarily on IEDs [improvised explosive devices] and small hit-and-run ambushes. The insurgents in Sangin kept attacking in large numbers, and regrouped for counter-attacks after the initial volleys instead of dispersing. The first Marine patrol to leave the wire came under fire 150 feet from the perimeter. One member of this patrol was shot dead. Within the next four days, another eight Marines died, and within the next 7 months the tragic total amounted to 25 Marines KIA. This video is dedicated IN MEMORY OF: Sgt. Jason Amores Lance Cpl. In July 2011 the Marines and sailors of 3rd Battalion 7th Marine Regiment began the Enhanced Mojave Viper training in Twenty nine Palms California. The Training was in preparation for an upcoming deployment. Imagery from the training was used to create this trailer-like video for the deployment.
