Nazi Vehicle Graveyard In Belarus

While exploring near the Stalin Line military base, I stumbled across this collection of old, burned-out German and Soviet vehicles that had been abandoned here. Whether this is the result of a military battle that took place here and was just not cleaned up or whether the vehicles were taken here after being destroyed in combat and dumped, I know not. For more, check out my post on this unique area: thevelvetrocket.com

Russian Space vehicles from the Spiral project - Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-105 & BOR

Predecessor of Shuttle and Buran The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-105 was a manned test vehicle to explore low-speed handling and landing. It was a visible result of a Soviet project to create an orbital spaceplane. BOR [Becpilotniye Orbitalniye Raketoplan] The BOR-4 flight vehicle is the scaled (1:2) copy of the SPIRAL. It has a tilting wing as well as the SPIRAL. Missions: 1980 Dec. 5 - The model BOR-4c, conducted its first suborbital flight in the direction of Lake Balkhash, on top of the K65M-RB5 (Kosmos-3) rocket to test a vehicle for future orbital missions. 1982 June 4 - A BOR-4 No. 404, was launched into orbit and splashed down in the Indian Ocean. It was announced under name Kosmos-1374. 1983 March 16 - A BOR-4 No. 403, was launched into orbit and splashed down in the Indian Ocean. It was announced under name Kosmos-1445. The recovery of the spacecraft by the Soviet Navy vessel was observed and photographed by a crew of an Australian military plane. The pictures of the top-secret recovery operation were then published around the world, prompting the secrecy-conscious Soviet authorities to re-schedule future missions to conclude in the Black Sea. 1983 Dec. 27 - A BOR-4 No. 405, a model of the Spiral space plane was launched into orbit and splashed down in the Black Sea instead of the Indian Ocean to maintain secrecy around the project. It was announced as Kosmos-1517. 1984 December 19 - A BOR-4 went orbital but splashed down into the Black Sea to the west of the Crimea ...

BMP-1 Soviet Infantry Vehicle

BMP-1 is a Soviet amphibious tracked infantry fighting vehicle. BMP stands for Boyevaya Mashina Pekhoty (Russian: Боевая Машина Пехоты), meaning "fighting vehicle of infantry") The BMP-1 was the world's first mass-produced infantry fighting vehicle. It was called the M-1967, BMP and BMP-76PB by NATO before its correct designation was known. It was a revolutionary design combining properties of an armoured personnel carrier and a light tank. The Soviet military leadership saw any future wars as being conducted with nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, where unprotected infantry would soon be either killed or incapacitated by radiation or chemical and biological agents. A vehicle like the BMP would allow infantry to operate from the relative safety of its armoured, radiation shielded interior in contaminated areas and to fight alongside it in uncontaminated areas. It would increase infantry squad mobility, provide fire support to them, and also be able to fight alongside main battle tanks. The BMP-1 was first tested in combat in the 1973 Yom Kippur War where it was used by Egyptian and Syrian forces.

The T-54 and T-55 tank series were main battle tanks designed by the Soviet Union. The first prototype T-54 appeared in 1946 shortly after the end of the Second World War. It was the successor to the T-44 and a direct descendant of the T-34, considered by many to have been the "finest all around tank of the war".[9] The tank entered full production in 1947 and became a mainstay of Red Army armored units, the Warsaw Pact countries and many other armies as well. T-54s and T-55s were involved in many of the world's armed conflicts. The T-55 was a new version incorporating many incremental improvements, as well as rudimentary blast and fallout protection for the nuclear battlefield, which began production in 1958.[10] It has been described as the "most popular tank in history"[11] and is the most widely used of all time. In 1962 it was joined by the T-62; they were both eventually replaced as front-line Soviet tanks by the T-64 and the T-72. And after that T-80 and T-90. More: mapsys.info

Soviet "Red" Seals dive propulsion vehicle, Protei-5

Russian DPV runs against Farallon DPV at Dutch Springs on 7/6/2008. At high speed and full charge, the MK-7 is as fast as the Protei-5, but one diver had a SCR and the other LP steel doubles. One thing I did note about the MK-7 is that is louder than the Protei-5. Good run with the Farallon before we actually rolled tape, but this video does show some stunts, as we were racing right at each other on two clips, we each knew to swing to starboard to avoid collision! The MK-7 has a dead man's switch, but if one is knocked unconscious on the Protei-5, it will keep running, certainley a danger, as the rescue team will have to chase you down and find you still attached and racing away! Typical military thinking for the soviets!

In fact Britain was the first nation to coin the word; tanks! A tank was a cover story for armored vehicles actually containing water reserves rather than a weapon. The 400 tank attack at Cambria was considered a limited success. The Germans, who possessed little tank warfare ability, was impressed at the scope of the offensive. At the outbreak of World War II German forces relied heavily on the Panzer I and II. The Panzer I was nothing better than a light half-track with a 7.92 machine gun. The Panzer II possessed little use as an anti-tank platform. The Panzer II possessed a 20mm cannon. During the invasion of France, the French actually possessed superior tanks. The Char-B and S-35 armor plating and cannon was superior to the Panzer III and IV. However, the Germans tactics, radio communication and coordination with air force units, was far superior to the Allied Forces. Prior to the 1941 German invasion of the Soviet Union, Germany suffered from victory disease. They did little to improve their vehicles. During the initial offensive into the USSR the fast but vulnerable T-28 and BT-7 were little match for light anti-tank guns and tactics. The Soviet vehicles were lost by the thousands. C&C Red Alert 3: MCV(Soviets) Surveillance Footage

This video shows surveillance footage of the MCV(Soviets) primary and secondary combat functions. Battlefield reconnaissance has revealed at least these facts about the Soviet MCV: • I like to move-it move-it -- With six independent tread nacelles, the Soviet MCV is extremely mobile, able to traverse any terrain accessible to other Soviet vehicles. It can seamlessly transition from land to water, deploying a pair of ballast pontoons while still in motion. • We can build it -- Like its Allied counterpart, the Soviet version of MCV can deploy into a Construction Yard, both on land or at sea. Able to construct the full array of Soviet battlefield structures, the Construction Yard can easily convert back into its mobile form to relocate to a more advantageous location. • In the open -- The Construction Yard is unable to build an entire structure and then deploy it as a whole. Instead, an external civilian construction team requires it to build structures from the foundation up at a predetermined location. This makes the structure being built vulnerable to attack during the construction process. • Large and In Charge -- The MCV and Construction Yard are both unarmed and are vulnerable to attack from a variety of enemy units. Commanders are advised to provide military escorts to ensure that this important vehicle/structure is not destroyed. Of course, enemy ground units would do well to avoid being run over by this gigantic vehicle - being run over by an MCV leaves quite a mark ...

Borne Sulinowo International Gathering of Military Vehicles

Footage shot at the Borne Sulinowo International Gathering of Military Vehicles in Poland. Borne Sulinowo was once a "secret" Soviet city and military base - not appearing on any maps. Now it hosts a free-for-all annual gathering of military history buffs, re-enactors, collectors and people who like to sit on tanks. Naturally there's an abundance of Soviet-era equipment , though there's a wide variety in general. I originally shot this footage to use on CNN Headline's Glenn Beck program. You can read more about Borne Sulinowo on Wikipedia.

BTR-90 (GAZ-5923) is an 8×8 wheeled infantry fighting vehicle developed in Russia, designed in 1993 and first shown publicly in 1994. It is a larger version of the BTR-80 vehicle, fitted with a BMP-2 turret. Armour protection is improved compared with the BTR-80, giving protection from 14.5 mm projectiles over the frontal arc. It is armed with a 30 mm 2A42 auto cannon, coaxial 7.62 mm PKT machine gun, AT-5 Spandrel ATGM, as well as a AGS-17 30 mm automatic grenade launcher. Limited numbers have been produced and are in service with Russian Internal Troops. Armament The main gun of the BTR-90 is a 30 mm Shipunov 2A42 auto cannon. The vehicle carries an ammunition load of five hundred rounds for this weapon. A 7.62 mm PKT coaxial machine gun with 2000 rounds and a 30 mm AGS-17 automatic grenade launcher are available as the secondary armament of the BTR-90. A guided missile system is also available for engaging armoured targets. This consists of four AT-5 Spandrel (Konkurs) missiles mounted on the turret. The launching unit is detachable, and can be used to launch missiles from the ground.[3] All the weapons are mounted on the turret and are assisted by a fire control system.[7] The fire control system allows the weapons to be used while the vehicle is moving, and in all weather conditions. The turret can be traversed 360 degrees with an elevation range of -5 to +75 degrees.[6][8] The vehicles weaponry allows it to engage targets at ranges up to 4 km. Helicopters and ...

C&C Red Alert 3: Ore Collector (Soviet) Surveillance Footage

This video shows surveillance footage of the Ore Collector's(Soviets) primary and secondary combat functions. Battlefield reconnaissance has revealed at least these facts about the Ore Collector: • Replace if damaged -- Each Soviet ore refinery is assigned its own ore collector vehicle, which can normally go about its business without direct supervision. Should that vehicle become disabled for any reason, the refinery has enough spare parts to build another. Naturally, Soviet war factories and naval yards can also assemble additional ore collectors if needed. • Reactive Armor -- If attacked, ore collector drivers are wise to take advantage of their reactive armor, which envelops the vehicle in a thick metal coat. However, they are discouraged from using this defensive measure because it prevents them from fulfilling their primary responsibility of collecting ore. • Steer clear -- While lacking in weapons, ore collectors are not completely defenseless, and could crush a man careless enough to stand in their way. Ore collector drivers have been known to take advantage of this as a last resort, and some have even slain enemy combatants by accident in this fashion, while blindly trying to maneuver with their reactive armor engaged. • Amphibious resourcing -- Much like their cousins the Sputnik exploration vehicles, ore collectors may transition to an aquatic mode on contact with water at least one meter deep. This video has no sound. Check my videos for other Red Alert 3 units.

Military Vehicles [Russia]: 9К81 С-300В Антей/9K81 S-300V Antaeus SAMS (СВРФ)

Language of Video Presentation: Russian (Русский Язык). 9K81 S-300V Antaeus (Russian: Антей) is part of the S-300 series of Russian long range Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (SAMS). The S-300 system was developed to defend against aircraft and cruise missiles for the Soviet Air Defence Forces; it was designed for the air defense of large industrial and administrative facilities, military bases, and control of airspace against enemy strike aircraft. The S-300 system was first deployed by the Soviet Union in 1979; subsequent variations were developed to also intercept ballistic missiles and is regarded as one of the most potent anti-aircraft missile systems currently fielded by any country. While most versions are mounted on 8X8 5P85-1 trucks serving as Mobile Launch Platform (MLP) vehicles and were produced by NPO Almaz, the 9K81 S-300V Antaeus (Russian: 9К81 С-300В Антей, NATO reporting name SA-12 Gladiator/Giant) are mounted on tracked vehicles, the MT-T transporters, and were built by Antey as opposed to Almaz; the V suffix stands for Войска (transliteration: Voyska, English for Ground Forces). It was created from the same project (hence the common S-300 designation) but different priorities resulted in a design quite different from the other versions. The tracks on the vehicle gives the S-300V better cross-country mobility than the S-300Ps on 8x8 wheeled transporters. It was designed to act as the top tier army air defence system, providing a defence against ballistic ...

Military Vehicles [Russia]: 2С4 Тюльпан/2S4 Tulip Self-propelled Mortar (СВРФ)

Language of Video Presentation: Russian (Русский Язык). The 2S4 is a Soviet Union self-propelled mortar. Its design is based on the GMZ tracked minelaying vehicle carrying an externally mounted M-240 240 mm breech-loading mortar on the rear of the hull. The crew consists of four men, but an extra five are required to operate the mortar. The mortar has a range of 9650 m but an extended range munition exists with a possible range of 20000 m. In addition to the high explosive bombs, it can fire armour-piercing, chemical and nuclear rounds. It can also fire the "Smel'chak" (translation: daredevil), a laser-guided round. Due to the large size of the weapon and the weight of the ammunition (130 kg for a standard projectile), it has a slow rate of fire: one round per minute. The extreme firepower per round however, compensates for the Tyulpan's slow rate of fire. The Tyulpan is currently the heaviest mortar in deployment among any country. It saw action during the conflicts in Afghanistan and Chechnya. In both conflicts, the Smel'chak projectile consistently destroyed targets quickly, precisely, and with only a few rounds. Current operators of the 2S4 Tyulpan: *Russia: 430 units in operational service. Former operators are: *Czechoslovakia: only 4 vehicles used since 1985 to 1991. *Soviet Union: all inventory were passed on to Russian Federation. Forest Brothers' life is fun!

During World War 2, many Estonians joined German units on the Eastern front, not because of the nazi ideology, but because the Germans would arm them. Estonians had suffered under Russian rule and were eager to pay back for the torture, mass murders and other crimes committed by the Soviet forces. Germans were in full retreat by 1944, so Estonians gathered the equipment they could from the retreating Germans and set up partisan headquarters in remote forests and swamps. From there they launched raids against the Soviet forces. Estonians sabotaged Soviet vehicles and equipment, punished known war criminals and slowed the advancing Red Army, hoping to eventually restore Estonia's independency.
