Algebra Help - The Quadratic Formula - YourTeacher.com

For a complete lesson on the quadratic formula, go to www.yourteacher.com. Get the exact algebra help you need with 1000+ online math lessons featuring a personal math teacher inside every lesson! In this lesson, students learn to solve quadratic equations in the form ax^2 + bx + c = 0 using the quadratic formula, which states that x = -b plus or minus the square root of b^2 -- 4ac over 2a. For example, to solve the equation x^2 -- 3x -- 8 = 0, since a = 1, b = -3, and c = -8, the quadratic formula states that x = 3 plus or minus the square root of (-3)^2 -- 4(1)(-8) over 2(1). Simplifying on the right side of the equation, x = 3 plus or minus the square root of 9 + 32 over 2, or x = 3 plus or minus the square root of 41 over 2, which is the final answer. Note that students also learn to derive the quadratic formula using completing the square in the first example problem in this lesson.

Solving Polynomial Equations - YourTeacher.com - Algebra Help

For a complete lesson on solving polynomial equations, go to www.yourteacher.com - 1000+ online math lessons featuring a personal math teacher inside every lesson! In this lesson, students learn that the first step in solving polynomial equations is to set the given equation equal to zero, the next step is to factor, and the final step is to set each of the resulting factors equal to zero and solve each equation. This process usually yields more than one solution, so the answer can be written as a solution set. Some of the problems involve factoring a trinomial into two binomials, and some of the problems involve factoring a binomial as the difference of two squares.

Multiplying Decimals - YourTeacher.com - Pre Algebra Help

For a complete lesson on multiplying decimals, go to www.yourteacher.com - 1000+ online math lessons featuring a personal math teacher inside every lesson! In this lesson, students learn to multiply decimals in the same way that one would multiply whole numbers (vertically). However, at the end of the problem, students must determine where the decimal goes in the answer by counting the total number of digits to the right of the decimal point in the original numbers, then placing the decimal point in the answer so that the answer has this same total number of digits to the right of the decimal point. For example, after multiplying 1.05 x 7.4, since there are a total of 3 digits to the right of the decimal point in the original numbers, place the decimal point in the answer so that there are 3 digits to the right of the decimal point.

Algebra: Solving Linear Equations - Part 1: The Basics

[NOTE: This video is only the first 18 minutes of the full lesson, please visit my website to purchase complete version] Lesson consists of providing you with a Self-Tutorial on how to solve linear equations. Tutor discusses what is an Equation, Solution, Solution Set, Equivalent Equations, Identity, Contradictions, Conditional Equations, Linear Equations, the Standard Form of a Linear Equation. I show you how to actually SOLVE linear equations going step-by-step. I don't skip steps. I review some of the properties of Equality here too. I remind you to check the work done and how to solve linear equations using a calculator. At the end, you will know how to easily solve equations that look like: 2[y - (4y - 1)] = 5 - 9y No word problems are done here. This is shown in DETAIL in Part 2 of the Lesson.

Algebra Word Problems - YourTeacher.com - Math Help

For a complete lesson on algebra word problems, go to www.yourteacher.com - 1000+ online math lessons featuring a personal math teacher inside every lesson! In this lesson, students learn to solve "number" word problems, such as the following. One number is four times as large as another. The sum of the numbers is 45. Find the numbers. Since the first sentence states that one number is 4 times as large as another, the numbers can be represented as x and 4x. Since the second sentence states that the sum of the numbers is 45, the equation can be set up as x + 4x = 45.

Percent Increase - YourTeacher.com - Pre Algebra Help

For a complete lesson on percent increase, go to www.yourteacher.com - 1000+ online math lessons featuring a personal math teacher inside every lesson! In this lesson, students learn to find the percent increase or percent decrease between two numbers, using the following formula amount of change/ original number. For example, to find the percent decrease if the price changes from $60 to $39, since the amount of change is $21, and the original number is $60, the percent decrease is $21/$60, which simplifies to 0.35. And remember that the answer is a percent, so move the decimal point two places to the right, to get 35%. So if the price changes from $60 to $39, the percent decrease is 35%.

Completing The Square - YourTeacher.com - Algebra Help

For a complete lesson on completing the square, go to www.yourteacher.com - 1000+ online math lessons featuring a personal math teacher inside every lesson! In this lesson, students learn to solve quadratic equations by completing the square. For example, to solve the equation s^2 - 6s + 5 = 0, the first step is put the constant term on the opposite side of the equation as the terms that contain the variables, by subtracting 5 from both sides, to get s^2 - 6s ___ = - 5 ___. Next, the number that goes in each space comes from half the coefficient of the middle term squared, which in this case is half of -6, or -3, squared, which is +9. So a +9 goes in each space, to get s^2 - 6s + 9 = - 5 + 9. The trinomial on the left side of the equation then factors as (s - 3)(s - 3), or (s - 3)^2, and the right side of the equation simplifies to 4, so the problem now reads (s - 3)^2 = 4. Finally, take the square root of both sides to get s - 3 = plus or minus 4, so s - 3 = 4, or s - 3 = -4, and solving each equation from here, s = 7 or -1.
