This is a demostration of the Xerox Alto computer in 1974. The Alto, introduced in 1973, but never commercially produced, was perhaps the most innovative design in computer history: it had a mouse, a GUI, an object-oriented OS and development tools, and fast networking with the first ethernet cards. These are features that wouldn't be common until 10 years later, and even 20 years later some of them were still cutting edge.

[Recorded: June 4, 2001] Founded in 1970, the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) created, over a relatively short period, a paradigm shift in computing. Many of the technologies in modern personal computers, including high-quality graphical user interfaces featuring windows and icons, computer generated bitmapped graphics, Ethernet networked distributed computing, and laser printing, were mature technologies at PARC by the end of the 1970s. The platform on which many of these technologies were utilized was the Xerox Alto personal computer, developed at PARC in 1973. Although small and slow by today's standards, the Alto's flexibility made it an ideal system for hardware and software experimentation. In this talk, Alto designers Chuck Thacker and Butler Lampson describe a few of the applications and technologies the Alto enabled, as well as the exceptional working environment at PARC and the extraordinarily talented group of people who made it all happen.

This is a screen capture of the Xerox Alto II in action. The Alto was the worlds first PC. The prototypes were developed at Xerox PARC during the 1970's. I noticed there was no video out there of one running, so I recorded a few minutes of the XeroX Alto Executive running and playing some games. Be sure to check out the dates in the programs. What you see on this disk is what was probably the world's first Pinball video game, A startrek game, and some sort of Turkey game. It has excellent graphics. The Alto was decades ahead of its time. If you guys like it, let me know and I'll upload more videos of demonstrations of the alto's software in action..

A wonderful tune, and very interesting to play over. This the 10th most played jazz standard so I thought I'd give it a go. It has been a while since I have played the alto, sorry if the playing is a bit rusty. This is a bauhaus walstein alto, which costs about £400, a bargain, with a selmer c* mouthpiece. The tenor is a selmer reference, other end of the price range :-)

Song for alto voice, guitar and wind instrument based on the poem "La Cigale et la Fourmi by Jean de La Fontaine" in the translation by SN Solomons (yes, I know the original insect is a cicada, but many English translations refer to a grasshopper since those insects are more familiar to anglophones...OK?!) The recording here uses a vocal sample to resemble a "tuned cicada" sound, with live guitar and voice, but of course the score allows for various wind instruments, especially recorder, or flute or clarinet. The score and parts can be obtained from Commixtus.fr A spoken version of the poem using the same melody on instruments (clarinet, bassoon and piano) will shortly be available, in French and in English, from the publisher Commixtus for the Fou de Basson recitals in 2011.
